A 52-year-old man faces charges in North Carolina—for attempting to rape an 89-year-old woman.
Jose Campuzano-Ramirez, who a number of media outlets are reporting is an illegal alien, is being held on a $1 million bail at the country jail.
Campuzano-Ramirez apparently broke into the victim’s home in South Smithfield, North Carolina, as the elderly woman slept. After briefly struggling with his victim, Campuzano-Ramirez fled the scene.
The woman, who suffered minor injuries, placed a burglary call to local police, who arrived the scene at 4am on Sunday. Officers reported seeing “obvious signs of struggles” inside the victim’s home, in addition to her injuries.
Police used K-9 units to follow the suspect’s scent trail. The dogs soon uncovered Campuzano-Ramirez after what a police report described as a “lengthy track.”
Campuzano-Ramirez has been charged with first-degree burglary, felony assault, first-degree kidnapping, attempted first-degree forcible rape, and attempted first-degree sexual offense.
A date has not yet been set for his first court appearance, and he remains in police custody.
