Oreo Cookie confused many on Monday when the company behind “Milk’s favorite cookie” released a short film detailing a young man’s experience coming out as gay.
The video is roughly 2 1/2 minutes long and shows a young Asian man preparing to come out to his extended family.
He is visibly nervous and practices making the big announcement with his mother and immediate family.
The mother calms her son by placing a hand on his leg.
Few Oreos are eaten during the film, but the tension is palpable throughout.
Before the rest of his family arrives, the mother leaves her nervous son a note on his written coming-out speech.
“She might be my mother, but you are my son,” the note reads, appearing to reference the boy’s grandmother.
With those words of encouragement, the son goes off to address his family as uplifting piano music scores the scene.
“Coming out doesn’t happen just once. It’s a journey that needs love and courage every step of the way,” Oreo Cookie tweeted along with the video. “Share our new film and let someone know you’re their #LifelongAlly.”
