White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Tuesday that the anticipated record number of people traveling to vacation destinations this July 4 weekend have President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy to thank.
Jean-Pierre’s comments came in response to a question from Reuters about whether or not people should be driving over the holiday in an effort to conserve fuel amid nationwide gas price spikes.
“Americans are going to do what they feel is right for themselves and for their family. That’s not something for us to make a judgment on,” she opened. “We’ve been in a pandemic for some time, and I think Americans are feeling as if the summer is time to get out and go visit families. And I think that’s a reaction that we’re seeing there.”
“A lot of that is thankful to the president and the work that he has done to make sure that more than 220 million people are fully vaccinated. That matters,” Jean-Pierre continued. “It’s not for me to say what Americans can do or can’t do, but I do think this is kind of the kind of the pendulum swinging as more people get vaccinated and more folks are feeling more comfortable and more safe to get out there.”
Biden and first lady Jill Biden visited a local health clinic in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday as part of the administration’s new efforts to vaccinate the roughly 18 million children under the age of 5 in the United States.
Jean-Pierre told reporters that parents have the choice to vaccinate their children “because of what the president has been able to do and the American Rescue Plan and the vaccination strategy that he put forward the moment he walked into this administration.”
