A transgender inmate has been moved from a women’s prison in California after being charged with raping his cellmate at the facility.
Tremaine Deon Carroll was transferred to Valley State Prison, a male-only facility in Delano. The 51-year-old faces two charges of rape and one of dissuading a witness from testifying, according to a report by the website 4W.

She was reportedly serving a short sentence for burglary and shared a cell with two female inmates and Carroll.
Doe claims Carroll began expressing sexual interest in her, but she rejected the advances. Less than 24 hours later, she alleges Carroll raped her in the prison shower.
A second victim was also named in the complaint.
Court documents show Carroll was charged for kidnapping, robbery, and sexual assault of two women at gunpoint in 1990, though these charges were dropped. After being released, Carroll was convicted for robbing a jewelry store in 1998. This triggered California’s ‘Three Strikes and You’re Out’ law, leading to a 25-year to life sentence.
California has moved over 44 biological male prisoners into female facilities since 2021.

The law says the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation cannot deny requests solely because of inmates’ anatomy, sexual orientation or “a factor present” among other inmates at the facility.
Women’s rights activists said the law harms incarcerated women.
“Previous to SB 132, biological male inmates were allowed to, on a case-by-case individualized basis, be placed in women’s facilities. But not if they hadn’t had surgery, and it was always very individualized,” Director of the Women’s Liberation Front Lauren Bone told Fox News.
“What the bill did…is it took away all of that safeguarding.”
Connecticut passed a similar law in 2018. Rhode Island, New York City and Massachusetts have also housed inmates based on gender identity.
