Google is reportedly following through on President Donald Trump’s executive action to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps.
The tech company went on X(formerly Twitter) to address its decision, citing its longstanding policy of updating place names to match official government sources, CNN reported.

The company added that they will also include the name change for Denali. The Alaskan mountain, formerly known as Mount McKinley, was renamed to its Indigenous name by former President Obama in 2015. However, on January 20, President Trump signed an executive order to revert the name to Mount McKinley. His stance on the name change claims it is an update to “American greatness,” and the executive order emphasized the importance of recognizing historical figures
“Also longstanding practice: When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name. Everyone in the rest of the world sees both names. That applies here too,” the post continued. However, Google clarified that these changes will only appear for U.S. users, and international users will see both old and new names.

As for the Gulf of Mexico, the executive action credits its renaming to its “significant contributions to the U.S. economy” and orders all federal maps and documents to reflect the change moving forward.
