Donald Trump has given Maine 10 days to commit to a proposed resolution after being found in violation of Title IX for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ high school sports.
The U.S. President signed an executive order banning biological men from competing in female sports soon after his inauguration in January and has since made it clear that any institutions not abiding by the ruling will be stripped of their federal funding.

On Monday, the governing body said that Greely High School, the Maine Principals’ Association, and the Maine Department of Education violated federal antidiscrimination law and must now accept a proposed resolution, which includes returning federal funding and retraining staff. Should they fail to comply, then the three entities risk referral to the Justice Department “for appropriate action.”
Trump previously characterized Maine as out of line with the order and told the county’s governor, Janet Mills, “You’re not getting any federal funding” during a meeting with governors at the White House. Mills responded by saying, “We’ll see you in court,” to which the Trump administration immediately launched an investigation that found Maine in violation of Title IX.

“The Maine Department of Education may not shirk its obligations under Federal law by ceding control of its extracurricular activities, programs, and services to the Maine Principals’ Association,” Anthony Archeval, acting director of the Office for Civil Rights at HHS, said in a statement. “We hope the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principals’ Association, and Greely High School will work with us to come to an agreement that restores fairness in women’s sports.”

The MPA has previously said that its current policy allowing transgender students to compete in girls’ sports is based on the Maine Human Rights Act and that it has no plans to change the policy to comply with President Trump’s executive order aimed at prohibiting transgender athletes from competing.
