North Korea says its leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of short-range ballistic missile systems that simulated nuclear strikes against US and South Korean forces.
Kim told state media KCNA on Friday about the need to strengthen the role of his nuclear forces in both deterring and fighting war.

The tests on Thursday involved a mobile ballistic missile system, as well as 600-millimeter multiple rocket launchers, KCNA said.
Pyongyang said the tests were aimed at training military units to more effectively carry out attacks and ensure a swift response to a nuclear crisis.

A defense ministry spokesman told KCNA the launches showed “the rapid counteraction posture and capability of the armed forces.”
It was the North’s first launches since March, when it fired ballistic missiles hours after US and South Korean troops began an annual military exercise drill.

Between 10,000-12,000 North Korean troops have been deployed to fight alongside Russia in Ukraine. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked them, describing the soldiers as “heroes.”
