NAACP Unanimously Passes Resolution Calling For Trump’s Impeachment

Delegates to the NAACP’s annual convention voted unanimously on Tuesday to support the impeachment of President Donald Trump, with the group’s president saying Trump is “unfit to serve this country.”

The push to come out against Trump was initiated by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who has put forth several impeachment measures in the House.

While the vote is unlikely to have any legislative consequences, it represents a total rebuff of the president from the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, where opposition to the Trump administration has become a common theme.

NAACP president Derrick Johnson said the move was completely justified, tweeting just after the vote, “Trump’s misconduct is unmistakable and has proven time and time again, that he is unfit to serve this country.”

The organization’s convention, held in Detroit, is a chance for its nearly half a million members to set their advocacy agenda for the next year. Top leaders within the NAACP, including Johnson, have long been vocal detractors of the president, especially relating to his stance on race and his recent attacks of four freshman congresswomen.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who represents a congressional district that includes areas of Detroit, received a standing ovation from the crowd with her statement, “I’m not going nowhere. Not until I impeach this president.”
