The Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man carrying a knife outside the White House on Saturday after he told a Secret Service officer he intended to kill President Trump, authorities reportedly said.
Officers arrested Roger Hedgpeth Saturday afternoon and charged him with threats to do bodily harm after he told the agent he was there to “assassinate” the president and “[had] a knife to do it with,” The Associated Press reported, citing a Metropolitan Police Department report.
Officers found a sheathed 3.5-inch knife on Hedgpeth’s left hip as well as an empty pistol holster on his right. Officers took him into custody and took him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, also impounding his vehicle, the news service reported.
Whether Hedgpeth was a resident of the area or whether he would need a lawyer appointed by a court was not immediately clear.
