They think they’re cute’: Ted Cruz tears into Democrats for ‘apologizing for communist dictators’

Sen. Ted Cruz ripped Democrats for not being tougher on China and other communist dictatorships around the globe.

“We won’t prevail in that battle, that fundamental battle of systems, if we’re too naive, if we’re too oblivious to even be aware that there is a battle being waged, much less to stand up and defeat the Chinese aggression,” Cruz said during a video interview with President Trump’s reelection campaign war room this week. “One of the things that drives me crazy about Democrats is they have this nasty little habit of apologizing for communist dictators.”

Cruz deadpanned: “They think they’re cute.”

The senator from Texas has been one of the most vocal critics of the Chinese Communist Party and its practices before and during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cruz has blamed China for the virus, which he says could have been better contained if the country had been more transparent with world health officials during the pandemic’s early days.

Cruz last month announced legislation that would sanction Chinese officials involved in alleged cover-ups of key information relating to the virus and the dangers it posed to the world’s economy.

“As the coronavirus was breaking out in Wuhan, the Chinese Communist Party deliberately silenced those who tried to sound the alarm and provide the world with medical information — just as they do with political speech they find threatening,” Cruz said in a statement when he announced the legislation. “They prioritized propaganda over protecting the health and safety of people around the world – and the consequences have been catastrophic.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders is among the most prominent members of the political left to have expressed warm opinions about socialist regimes.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba, but it’s unfair to say everything’s bad,” Sanders said in February, at a time when he was still running for president. “When Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a literacy program.”

Cruz, a Republican of Cuban descent, appeared offended by those remarks.

“It really makes a difference when those you murder at the firing squad can read & write,” Cruz quipped.
