Rock formations ‘permanently damaged’ at Red Rock Canyon Open Space, Colorado cops say

A popular Colorado park is permanently damaged after people sprayed rocks with a Black Lives Matter message, police said.

The Colorado Springs Police Department said natural sandstone rock formations at Red Rocks Canyon Open Space will be damaged forever.

“While we can clean our headquarters, the natural sandstone rock formations at Red Rocks Canyon Open Space are permanently damaged,” police said on Facebook.

Red Rock Canyon is a series of canyons and ridges that have been “sculpted by erosion,” according to Friends of Red Rock Canyon.

“The ridges and canyons offer beautiful views and sheltered enclaves for inspiration, varied terrain for recreation, and a 240 million year slice of sedimentary geology for education,” Friends of Red Rock Canyon said on its website.

One photo shared by police shows “Black lives matter too!” spray painted on the rock. Another photo shows “BLM” and what looks like a social media handle blurred out.

Colorado Springs police said their Police Operations Center was also vandalized, with photos showing red paint tossed on the building.

“We are thankful to serve Colorado Springs and only ask that all of us, together, take care of our beautiful city,” police said.
