Officer reinstated as school resource officer at Prospect HS after first being reassigned for defending thin blue line patch

MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Mount Prospect police officer who was removed as a school resource officer at Prospect High School following her appearance on Fox News last week will be back in that role, after all.

Officer Lisa Schaps said she’s excited to get back to her job as the school resource officer, following what were called “productive” conversations.

She was reassigned after people complained about her appearance on Fox, where she defended the thin blue line patches on officers’ uniforms, after doing the same thing during a village board meeting.

“Please do not do not paint us all with such a wide brush,” said Officer Lisa Schaps, during the appearance. “We are good people. We are here to serve and protect.”

Schaps said “You know, I think for me, I understand where they are coming from when I listen to the things that they are saying, but those were never our intentions. We never saw this as hateful, oppressive.”

This all started, because of complaints from some in the village about the thin blue line patches. There have been objections to the thin blue line symbolism, because it’s been co-opted by some on the far right and is viewed by some as representing white supremacy.

The chief, John Koziol, said she did nothing wrong.

“She was articulate. She was professional. It’s almost like police officers aren’t allowed to speak from the heart anymore,” he said.
