Five teenagers are in custody following a shooting that left an 8-year-old girl dead, and wounded her 7-year-old cousin, North Carolina police said.
Statesville Police are still looking for one suspect, who is said to be armed and dangerous.
Police responded to a gunshots in Statesville and found Ah’Miyahh Howell, 8, and Tariq Lowery, 7, suffering from gunshot wounds outside of a residence around 7 p.m. on June 28.
Officers immediately began life-saving efforts until EMS arrived. Both children were transported to the hospital, but Howell died, according to police.
The Statesville Police Department reached out to the community for assistance and were told several people were outside when the shooting began. However, no witnesses came forward to provide more details, officers said.
Statesville Police Department, with the assistance of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, located and seized two vehicles allegedly connected with the homicide.
The first vehicle was a 2003 White Honda Accord, and the second a 2013 White Mercedes C250, according to police. Forensic evidence obtained from the vehicles and from the crime scene reportedly provided enough information to establish potential suspects.
Sayqwon Kalil Miller and Donnell Tiaijan Ellison, both 19, of Statesville, and Nasir Cor’lee Turner, 18, of Mooresville, were each charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony conspiracy and discharging a weapon into occupied property causing serious bodily injury.
A juvenile petition was obtained for a 17-year-old suspect with the same charges as the others. Turner, Miller, and the juvenile were arrested on July 9.
Police continue to search for Ellison. Police implore the public to call 911 with any information on Ellison, who should be considered armed and dangerous.
They are also asking anyone who may have witnessed the murder of Howell, or the shooting of Lowery to contact the Statesville Police Department.
