Detroit police identify female suspect who ‘viciously’ ran over, killed woman trying to save child

DETROIT (WWJ) — Police are looking for a woman who “viciously” ran over and killed a 40-year-old mother trying to save a young child on Detroit’s east side late Sunday night.

Detroit Police Chief James White said the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Manning and Crusade when two parties apparently had gathered in the front yard to settle some sort of ongoing fight or dispute.

He said 40-year-old Tiffany Watson was hit and killed by the suspect, who is described only as “an unknown female.”

“Our suspect came through, drove over the yard, and ran over, viciously, the victim,” White said during a Monday press conference.

The victim made no attempt to avoid Watson, White said.

A young child was also in the path of the vehicle, but Watson was able to help them to safety before being hit by what is believed to be a silver or gray 2020 Nissan Murano. Police did not say whether Watson was the child’s mother.

Authorities have released surveillance video of the suspect inside of a liquor store, as well as the suspect’s vehicle.

Police previously said gunshots were also fired around the time of the incident as neighbors were trying to defend themselves, but nobody was struck.

Video of the incident shows the Nissan circle a traffic sign and nearly hit Watson. The car then goes through the yard and continues down the road before it turns around and speeds toward her. The suspect fled the scene after hitting the victim.

Watson was listed in critical condition on Sunday, but she succumbed to her injuries on Monday, police said.
