Giant Eagle says it will reimburse employees who are forced to travel for abortion services

One of Pennsylvania’s largest grocers has joined the list of companies pledging to assist employees in abortion-ban states who are forced to travel for reproductive care.

The company’s announcement Tuesday came on the heels of last week’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

A spokesperson for Giant Eagle Supermarkets, whose headquarters is located in O’Hara Township, told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4: “At Giant Eagle, we are committed to providing our team members access to comprehensive health care, including access to reproductive care. We join other businesses by committing to reimburse expenses for covered family members to travel between states to access family planning services.”

The spokesperson said the company would “share specific details related to the offering with our team members in the coming days.”

Giant Eagle also has stores in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Maryland. Per TribLive.com, West Virginia’s only abortion clinic followed last week’s decision, and Indiana has legislation pending to ban abortions, too.

Giant Eagle’s announcement comes just days after another Pa.-based company, Dick’s Sporting Goods, announced that it would repay employees as much as $4,000 in expenses incurred should they have to travel for reproductive care following last week’s Supreme Court decision.

Several large corporations around the country have made similar pledges since the ruling.
