Declaring an open-borders ‘invasion’

OPINION:

“¡No mas!”

That’s Spanish for “No more!” as any boxing fan of long-standing could tell you. In a Nov. 25, 1980, welterweight title rematch in New Orleans against Sugar Ray Leonard, a battered Roberto Duran threw in the towel in the eighth round, with the Panamanian gesturing to the referee and declaring “¡No mas!”

With hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants pouring across our southern border every month (1.5 million migrant apprehensions this fiscal year — since October — alone, along with an estimated 476,000 “got-aways”), you would have thought that President Biden and his feckless Homeland Security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, would by now have declared “¡No mas!” and finally taken action to secure our southern border and, with it, our imperiled U.S. sovereignty.

If you thought that, however, you would be badly mistaken.

No one — least of all the wave after wave of illegal immigrants themselves —  believes Mr. Mayorkas when he warns them, as he did as recently as May 24, “Do not come to the border!”

“[W]e continue to warn people not to take the dangerous journey,” he insisted on July 3 on CBS’ “Face the Nation” — likely with his fingers crossed behind his back.

But with the Supreme Court three days earlier on June 30 having unwisely greenlit Mr. Biden’s intent to unravel former President Donald Trump’s tough “Remain in Mexico” policy for would-be migrants seeking to claim asylum here, the word is surely echoing from Tijuana, Mexico, to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, that our doors are wide open.

It’s abundantly clear that the administration’s mantra on illegal immigration is “¡Mas, mas, mas!” with no end in sight.

To say the illegal immigration problem is going to get dramatically worse before it gets any better is to understate the likely consequences of the high court’s 5-4 ruling, in which the lockstep liberals — Justices Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan — were aided and abetted by two putative conservatives, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.

If that weren’t bad enough, Mr. Biden inexplicably also continues to press for a legal greenlight to end Title 42 restrictions keeping out illegal immigrants found to be sick with communicable diseases.

On Mr. Biden and Mr. Mayorkas’ watch, the southern border has become such an omnishambles that officials from several Texas counties held a joint press conference on July 5 at the Kinney County Civic Center in Brackettville, Texas, to declare their communities are literally under invasion.

“Would you recognize an invasion,” said Rep. Chip Roy, as reported by the Daily Signal website, “an invasion of the state of Texas that is undermining our security, risking the health and well-being of Texans, allowing fentanyl to pour into our schools and communities, for Texans to die, allowing our ranches to get run over, empowering cartels who are well-armed along the border with their tentacles reaching into Texas.”

“You’re damn right that’s an invasion,” the Republican Texas lawmaker said.

Regrettably, that’s neither political rhetoric nor hyperbolic bluster, as the sheer numbers indicate.

Worse still, as Stephen Miller — a key architect of Trump’s tough border and immigration policies — noted on Fox News’ “Hannity” on July 7, Mr. Biden’s unraveling of those policies has been “planned, purposeful and premeditated.”

As such, the local Texas officials know they cannot count on this administration to enforce immigration law and stem the invasion, hence their declaration.

They cite Articles I and IV of the U.S. Constitution for declaring an invasion. “Article I grants the states the power, if the federal government doesn’t act, to take matters into their own hands to protect their citizens,” said Kinney County Attorney Brent Smith.
