Progressive Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York angrily lashed out about being harassed on the U.S. Capitol steps despite ridiculing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for being targeted by protesters.
Ocasio-Cortez complained on social media Thursday when a man, BlazeTV contributor Alex Stein, catcalled her as she walked to Congress.
“I posted about a deeply disgusting incident that happened today on the Capitol steps, but took it down bc it’s clearly someone seeking extremist fame,” tweeted Ocasio-Cortez.
She posted the video of the man smiling and calling her his “favorite big-booty Latina” before calling her “sexy” and referring to her pro-abortion political stance.
“I was actually walking over to deck him because if no one will protect us then I’ll do it myself but I needed to catch a vote more than a case today,” she added.
Critics of the congresswoman took her to task for the hypocrisy over protests against Kavanaugh.
“@AOC, you can’t mock the harassment of Justice Kavanaugh and then 5 seconds later complain about being harassed and expect sympathy. Can’t have your cake and eat it too, brat,” responded Steven Crowder.
“So let me get this straight. It’s fine to run a Supreme Court Justice out of a restaurant. That’s just democracy in action and you support that. But the moment someone yells at you in public, it’s a serious incident that shouldn’t be allowed? Amazing,” read another popular tweet.
“This is exactly why people like @aoc are utter hypocritical hacks. They want vigorous opposition, even ride and distributing opposition, but only to THE OTHER SIDE. That guy was an ass, to be sure, but so are most of the loud idiots outside of Kavanaugh’s house,” replied Pradheep Shanker of National Review.
Some pointed out that she had previously defended protests that made people uncomfortable.
“The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable. Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows. To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable… that’s the point,” tweeted Ocasio-Cortez in 2020.
Democrat Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri took the opposite stance and characterized the catcalling of Ocasio-Cortez as “violence” in a statement on Twitter.
“Violence towards women of color in politics is not theoretical: it is real, it is dangerous, and simply not enough is done to keep us safe and alive. Rep. @AOC, I’m sorry. Congress as an institution and our society as a whole must do better at protecting you and us from this,” tweeted Bush.
The Capitol Police said in a statement to Politico that the man had done nothing criminal despite being inappropriate. They added that they stopped the man out of an abundance of caution and ran his information but found no warrants.
