Another day, another bizarre statement by Kanye West. The rapper, who has been in the news for quite some time now for his controversial statements against ‘Black Lives Matter’, has now disregarded the very incident that started the public movement two years back.
In a recent interview, Kanye said that George Floyd did not die due to being suffocated by a police officer’s knee, instead, the usage of fentanyl caused his death. The fashion designer has apparently made this opinion after watching Candace Owens’ documentary on Black Lives Matter.
Kanye West Blames Fentanyl for George Floyd’s Death
Ye was in an interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on their podcast Drink Champs when he made the statement, “I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out. One of the things that his two roommates said was they want a tall guy like me, and the day that he died, he said a prayer for eight minutes.”

“They hit him with the fentanyl. If you look, the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that,” he added. West then compared Floyd to late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, who died after battling cancer last November. “This white company Louis Vuitton is now making statues of him as a martyr, and we don’t know why exactly [he died], they said it was cancer,” he added.
Medical Experts Testified that Floyd had Died of Hypoxia
George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who put his knee on the black man’s neck for about nine minutes and suffocated him. A witness recorded the incident, and the video soon went viral, sparking outcry and public protests.
During the trial, medical experts testified that although traces of fentanyl had been found in Floyd’s blood, he died due to lack of oxygen due to the knee being pressed over his neck. Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, second-degree manslaughter, and third-degree murder in April last year.
Ye’s Interview was Pulled Down on Sunday
During the interview, Ye had asked N.O.R.E., “Can you even run this interview?,” in reference to his The Shop interview being taken down for ‘hate speech and extremely dangerous stereotypes.’ The Drink Champs podcast then faced a similar fate. The episode was uploaded on Revolt TV on Saturday night, but was pulled down on Sunday morning.
After Ye made the outrageous comments, N.O.R.E. responded by saying, “We Black people, we black panthers…we f**k with you when you say it’s time to f**k with you. We want to continue to follow you, you’re Ye. We know White lives matters, we know that. But Black lives matter when we get killed every single f**kin’ day. We have to notice that.”
Candace Owens, whose documentary Ye cited for his opinion, has been friends with the rapper for a long time. In 2018, Kanye had tweeted, “I love the way Candace Owens thinks,” to which she had replied, “I need you to help wake up the Black community.” Earlier this month, the two were seen supporting the ‘White Lives Matter’ t-shirt during Yeezy Fashion Show.
