Professor Floats Theory That Brittney Griner Being Punished Due To Being Black & Gay

Two things are abundantly clear: Brittney Griner is a Black woman who is also gay.

The Phoenix Mercury superstar was sentenced to nine years in prison on drug charges in Russia. She was caught at the airport with hash oil in a vape pen in her backpack.

Just recently, a prominent professor gave a theory that Griner received such a harsh sentence because of skin color and sexuality.

“There is no question that if she weren’t a woman who challenged the sexual norms… She’s married to a woman, but she’s a dominant ball player. She’s a phenomenal cultural icon. Even LeBron had to admit it,” Michael Eric Dyson said, per Yahoo. “This Black woman, had she been anybody else — even a straight Black woman would’ve received more support than a queer Black woman with a Black wife.”

The U.S. State Department has classified Griner as “wrongfully detained.”

Over the weekend, South Carolina coach Dawn Staley and Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer wore long-sleeved shirts honoring Brittney Griner as part of a series of efforts to support the detained WNBA star during their teams’ No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

The coaches got together on court before the game for a moment of silence for Griner as well.

The 32-year-old, who played for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the Russian Premier League during the WNBA offseason, averaged a sterling 20.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game last season.
