President Joe Biden and Sen. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) stumbled through a Saturday press conference addressing Philadelphia’s collapsed bridge, with the commander in chief noting a union member’s biceps were “as big as my thighs.”
The press conference featured an array of confusing and bizarre moments from two of the highest elected officials in the country.
After being commended by Philadelphia mayor Jim Kenney (D.) for “seeing what he could do” to help after the bridge collapsed, Biden said, “If I didn’t, I’d be sleeping alone.” He returned to the microphone to explain the joke, reminding the audience, “My wife’s a Philly girl.” He then asked, “Where are we going?”
Both men have a history of gaffes. Biden notably forgot the words of the Declaration of Independence during the 2020 campaign and repeatedly stumbles while reading numbers in speeches. He took a hard fall at the Air Force Academy graduation earlier this month.
Fetterman suffered a stroke in May 2022 that kept him off the campaign trail for three months. He checked himself into Walter Reed Medical Center in February for what his office called “severe” clinical depression and returned to the Senate after six weeks.
When introducing Rep. Brendan Boyle (D., Pa.) at the press conference, Fetterman said, “Pleasure to be here and to introduce my friend, Congressman Boyle Bile.” Boyle ignored the mispronunciation and introduced himself as his true identity.
