Nevada woman beaten in front of kids in suspected anti-Asian hate crime on Manhattan F train

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A tourist from Nevada was beaten on a Manhattan subway train in front of her family in an attack that’s being investigated as an anti-Asian hate crime.

The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force released images Monday of a teen suspect in the assault last Thursday night aboard a southbound F train near the West Fourth Street–Washington Square station in Greenwich Village.

Sue Young, 51, her husband and their two young daughters were sitting on the train when three teen girls began to verbally harass them with expletives and anti-Asian slurs.

“It was just insult, after insult, after insult,” Young told WCBS-TV.

Young wasn’t the only person who was attacked. A bystander, Joanna Lin, started recording the assault and was also targeted by the teens.

“She ran over, grabbed me by the hair, threw me on the ground and started punching me several times,” Lin said. “It shouldn’t happen.”

Lin said she knows martial arts and was able to deflect some of the blows and call 911.

The teens fled at the West Fourth Street stop, police said.

Young suffered cuts and bruises to her head from the attack.

“My glasses got broken. I’ve had a headache for a couple of days now, because the hair was pulled, and so my scalp was very tender,” Young said.

She said she wants the suspects to be punished but doesn’t want the incident to follow them forever.

“I don’t want this to ruin their lives,” she said. “I don’t want it to be where now here’s a stigma and now you can’t get a job.”

It’s just the latest suspected anti-Asian attack in the subway in recent weeks, with a man pummeled at the Queensboro Plaza station in Long Island City and a woman spit on at the Bergen Street station in Park Slope.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
