A school bus driver in Louisiana has been charged with beating up a middle school student.
Disturbing video of the incident appears to show the driver slapping, pushing, and choking the child, Knewz.com has discovered.
It happened on Monday, October 30, on a school bus from Marrero Middle School, just south of New Orleans.
The driver, 77-year-old Miles Jenkins, reportedly resigned after the scuffle with the student, which was captured in cellphone video taken by another student on the bus and posted to social media.
In the 20-second video, a boy appears to try getting up out of his seat while Jenkins shoves him back down multiple times. At one point, as the boy tries to stand, Jenkins appears to slap his face, and the two continue to shove each other, according to the video, obtained by WVUE-TV.
That’s when Jenkins is apparently seen allegedly pinning the student against the bus window, choking him. Another student yells, “Get off of him,” WVUE reports.
It’s not clear what led up to the ordeal.
The student’s father reported the driver to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, according to the Times-Picayune. The incident was under investigation.
Jenkins was booked into jail for battery and his bail was set at $500, the newspaper reported, but he was released without having to pay because of crowding at the jail.
The driver was reportedly assigned to the job by a third-party employer called First Student. A spokesperson for the bus company sent a statement to WVUE-TV, saying in part, “we take our responsibility to provide a safe environment on our school buses very seriously. The interaction the driver had with the student was unacceptable.”
Knewz.com also reported on another incident that happened in Utah on the same day, Monday, October 30. A school bus driver was arrested for allegedly setting multiple buses on fire, including one that had dozens of children on board. No injuries were reported.
Earlier in October, Knewz.com reported on a school bus driver in Oklahoma who allegedly held a group of students on the bus against their will. He reportedly physically stopped at least one student from getting off the bus and refused to talk to parents who were reportedly banging on the door. He allegedly drove the bus at slow speeds while children jumped out of the emergency door at the back of the vehicle.
Prosecutors declined to press kidnapping charges in the Oklahoma incident, but the school district did terminate the driver’s employment.
