Three migrants have been arrested after they allegedly attacked and killed an immigration agent at a checkpoint near the US southern border.
Luis Alberto Olivas García was attacked Monday around 12.30pm after he asked a group of migrants for their identification documents.
Preliminary reports indicate he sustained several wounds caused by a sharp object, possibly a knife, and a head injury most likely from a rock, El Horizonte reported.

Two Venezuelan men – identified only as Carlos A. S., 36, and 29-year-old David José V. – were arrested in connection to García’s murder, according to Mexico’s National Immigration Institute.
A Colombian national referred to as Carlos N. was also detained over the attack. As of late Monday, no official charges had been filed against the trio.
García was killed just hours after he had received an award recognizing his 30 years of service as a federal agent with the National Immigration Institute.
Several agents have taken to social media to pay tribute to their slain colleague, with many posting images of black bows bearing the agency’s initials in yellow, according to local newspaper Regeneración.

García’s death of the agent marked a rare case of deadly violence against agents weeks before an expected crackdown on immigration when President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
The death of the migration official comes as would-be migrants await an expected tightening on entry to the US once Trump takes office on January 20.
Hundreds of migrants waited in long lines outside an immigration office in southern Mexico on Monday, hoping to secure safe passage north and enter the US legally before Trump returns to power.

The Mexican government runs a program of busing migrants with confirmed CBP One appointments from southern Mexico to the northern border, seeking to protect them from gangs and organized crime groups that extort and kidnap migrants traveling across the country.
The Mexican government’s buses generally run two or three times a week, transporting migrants over a thousand miles north to Mexican border cities.
