Coca-Cola drinkers around the world have been warned to be cautious as many areas are experiencing a major recall.
Coca-Cola’s European bottling unit ordered the recall after detecting a high level chlorate in some soft drinks. The affected products include coke, Fanta, Sprite, Tropico, and Minute Maid brands. The American multinational corporation owns all of these brands.

As of current, the recall applies to Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, but limited quantities of the affected products were reportedly sent to other countries, according to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners. They handle distribution in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia indicating that the recall could go much further.

However, the European Union has firm rules on the maximum level of chlorate residue that is allowed in food. Exposure to high levels of chlorate can be dangerous for people with thyroid disorders, babies and young children. One time exposure to heightened levels of the chemical has a “negligible effect” according to the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.
