‘I will not apologise for unmasking trans teen athlete,’ says suspended Maine representative

Ms Libby, critics argued, could have made her point without posting the pictures.

But she is unrepentant.

“Words don’t have the same impact. There’s a picture. I think the fact that there’s a picture and you could see that this is a young man, is why it garnered the reaction that it did.

“People can see right there in front of them. This is not fair to Maine girls,” she added.

“And if you don’t want the attention then you shouldn’t put yourself in a public position to have that attention.”

‘I was shut down at every turn’

The Maine legislature was in recess at the time, but she came under mounting pressure to apologise.

Ms Libby was given short shrift when she spoke against the motion to suspend her.

What started as a local dispute escalated at a meeting of state governors in the White House with Mr Trump clashing with Janet Mills, Maine’s governor.

He threatened to withdraw all federal funding from Maine’s schools unless she agreed “to keep men out of women’s sports”.

Ms Mills, a 77-year-old former prosecutor, was not impressed, telling the president “we’ll see you in court”.

The prospect of an expensive court fight with the Trump administration irked Ms Libby.

“We certainly don’t want our tax dollars going to fight to keep boys in girls’ sports.”

Ms Libby has become the poster girl for the fight over whether boys who have transitioned should be allowed to compete against girls.
