Archaeologists confirm Bible’s account with shocking new discovery at Jesus’ burial site

Underneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, archaeologists from Rome’s Sapienza University have unearthed an ancient garden, referenced in the Gospel of John as surrounding the site where Jesus was crucified.

John 19:41 states: “Now in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus.” The dig started when the church underwent renovations in 2022, but it was only recently that ‘evidence of the presence of olive trees and grapevines from around 2,000 years ago’ was found.

This discovery contributes to the ongoing discussion about the location of Jesus’ burial. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which many scholars agree is the site of Jesus’ entombment, attracts approximately four million visitors annually.

The discovery has not only shed light on details about Jesus’ burial but also unveiled new information about the history of ancient Jerusalem.

“The church stands on a quarry,” Stasolla went on. “We discovered pottery, lamps, and other everyday items from that era’

‘The archaeobotanical findings have been particularly intriguing for us, given what is mentioned in the Gospel of John, which is believed to have been written or gathered by someone familiar with Jerusalem at the time’.
