An 18-year-old Missouri teen, identified as Nyla Simmons by police, was dancing on the roof of an SUV. At one point, however, Simmons fell and, tragically, was struck by an oncoming firetruck that was responding to an unrelated emergency call. Simmons, unfortunately, died as a result.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police, the incident took place on April 26 at around 11:20 p.m. in St Louis. At the time, a Cadillac Escalade stopped at a red light on the corner of Chouteau and South Compton, as per police. Nyla Simmons was dancing on the roof of the vehicle. The Escalade, then, made a left turn, causing Simmons to fall off and hit the pavement.

Parents Mourn

According to First Alert 4, Nyla Simmons was the youngest of five siblings. She had graduated from Parkway North High School in 2024. Sadly, Nyla was set to start her cosmetology studies at Grabber School of Hair Design on Monday, April 28.

According to Nyla’s parents, Everett and Letrice Simmons, she was attending a friend’s prom send-off before she was fatally struck by the firetruck.

“We aren’t ever going to be the same after this… I’m still in shock right now,” both parents told the outlet.

Having great expectations for his daughter’s future, Everett stated that he feels “highly distraught” as he will never get to see the woman Nyla was to become.

At the same time, neither parent blamed Nyla’s friends who were with her in the SUV for what happened to their daughter.

While grieving, Letrice and Everett warn other parents about incidents of this nature. They hope that this never happens to anyone else. “We want all her people and her friends to take this and learn from it,” Everett said. Letrice added, “Don’t get on top of a car, ya’ll, just don’t get on top, just be safe.”

The incident remains under investigation by authorities.
