Buckle Up, America: EPA Axes Obama-Era Climate Rule, Paving Way For Cheaper Cars

Standing at an Indiana auto dealership, Administrator Zeldin, joined by U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Indiana Governor Mike Braun, and other key leaders, declared an end to sixteen years of regulatory uncertainty.

The 2009 Endangerment Finding has been the legal bedrock for a cascade of costly greenhouse gas emission regulations, including the controversial Biden-Harris Administration’s electric vehicle (EV) mandate. Critics have long argued these regulations burdened auto manufacturers and consumers with immense costs and limited choices.

“With this proposal, the Trump EPA is proposing to end sixteen years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers,” stated Administrator Zeldin. He emphasized that past administrations “twisted the law, ignored precedent, and warped science” to impose what he called “hundreds of billions of dollars in hidden taxes every single year” on American families. Zeldin highlighted concerns that the EPA’s GHG emissions standards themselves, not carbon dioxide, were the true threat to livelihoods.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright echoed the sentiment, praising President Trump’s leadership for “returning to free and open dialogue around climate and energy policy – driving the focus back to following the data.” Governor Mike Braun added that the Obama-Biden EPA “used regulations as a political tool and hurt American competitiveness without results to show for it,” hailing today’s announcement as a “win for consumer choice, common sense, and American energy independence.”

The American Trucking Association’s President and CEO, Chris Spear, also lauded the move, stating the electric-truck mandate had put the trucking industry “on a path to economic ruin” and would have “crippled our supply chain, disrupted deliveries, and raised prices for American families and businesses.”

This action marks a continuation of President Trump’s “Power the Great American Comeback” initiative, aiming to “unleash American energy, lower costs for Americans, revitalize the American auto industry, restore the rule of law, and give power back to states to make their own decisions.” The debate over climate regulation and its economic impact has just taken a dramatic turn, promising a spirited public discussion as this proposal moves forward.
