Assembly Bill 495 (AB 495) has many California parents shaking with rage, coupled with fear. Not that long ago, California parents were battling against their daughters having to compete with biological boys wanting to cosplay as girls. Before that, parents were being forced to affirm their child’s chosen gender or face the threat of them being removed from their home. AB 495 came quickly down the pike, presenting itself as a compassionate solution for illegal alien children whose parents might be swept up in an ICE raid and deported. What it turns out to be is a nuclear bomb that decimates parental rights, not to mention opens all children — legal or illegal — to further harm and human trafficking.

When we lived in California and adopted our first dog from an animal rescue, we had to fill out a five-page application and have more than a few home visits to ensure the environment was safe and conducive for a pet. But in the name of purportedly protecting illegal alien children, California lawmakers are once again giving the middle finger to law-abiding parents, stripping their rights and tossing them aside like so much detritus.

Here’s how we got here. Last spring, the California Assembly Democrats decided to cleverly switch the language of the California Family Code to somehow “protect” children illegally in the country from feared ICE raids by allowing shirttail relatives or, for that matter, perfect strangers to take them out of school or daycare.

AB 495 was swiftly moved through the Assembly Committees, and is currently in Senate Appropriations. Should it pass out of that committee, it will reach the Senate floor for a vote, and with California’s Democrat Supermajority, it is all but guaranteed to pass. While Governor Gavin Newsom is thirsty to earn more bona fides toward his 2028 presidential run, he also needs to maintain his reputation as a progressive poser. So, should it pass, he may veto the bill, or he may sign it. Newsom is as mercurial as he is oleaginous.
California parents, family advocates, and parental activists are raising the alarm, and one prominent pastor has used his pulpit to issue this warning. On July 30, Jack Hibbs of Calvary Chapel in Chino Hills gave a fiery and pointed message about AB 495.
“This is the end of [parental rights],” Calvary Chapel Chino Hills Pastor Jack Hibbs told parishioners last week. “If this bill passes, I’m going to ask you [parents] to leave the state of California. You’re going to have to pack up and you’re gonna have to get out. You gotta get out. You gotta run with your kids. You gotta go.”

A visibly angry Hibbs warned parents attending Calvary Chapel Chino Hills recently that the bill “100% strips parents of their parental rights.”
Hibbs is calling all California parents to take action and show up in person at the Sacramento Capitol on August 19, a day after the legislature returns from their Summer recess. Someone arranged for Hibbs and the parental contingent to hold the Capitol steps for the entire day. He urged congregants to do all they could to make their way to Sacramento, “to stand for righteousness, and to do the right thing.”

Several families I knew personally fled the state during the COVID lockdowns because of Newsom’s executive fiat demanding that every child be vaccinated. Should AB 495 pass, it will be the last straw that breaks the back of parents who simply want to protect and raise their children as they see fit.
Hibbs exhorted that, “It’s time for us to get righteously angry.” Hibbs further warned that if AB 495 passes: “Listen to me when I say, get ready to leave.”
