Jamie Michele Bradley-Brun, 40, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder in a hearing presided over by Circuit Court Judge Marvin Dukes. The proceedings revealed disturbing details regarding the death of six-year-old Mackay Bradley-Brun and the narrow escape of her eight-year-old sister.

Following the murder, Bradley-Brun removed the child from the tub and dressed the body in a “funeral dress” before placing her on a bed.
The violence did not end there. Prosecutors say the mother then woke her eight-year-old daughter and attempted to repeat the drowning method. However, the older child was able to physically struggle against her mother. The commotion and the child’s screams woke the eldest sibling in the home, who intervened before the eight-year-old could be killed.

During the hearing, the prosecution pushed back against claims that the act was impulsive or solely the result of addiction. Jones, a member of the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office Career Criminal Unit, emphasized the calculated nature of the crime.
“This wasn’t an accident or a mental health crisis,” Jones told the court. “This defendant planned it. She is competent and she knew what she was doing. She placed blame on others and on her alcoholism, neither of which is a legitimate defense in South Carolina.”

The Career Criminal Unit, which handled the case, focuses on violent and habitual offenders and has secured convictions against 538 defendants since 2009.
