One Democratic senator described the surprise move as the White House throwing “a stick of dynamite” into the negotiations.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) admitted the maneuver severely damaged trust on Capitol Hill, leaving lawmakers asking, “What else should be worried about?”

Republicans pushed back, accusing Democrats of stalling for political gain. Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.) told The Hill that Democrats torpedoed the deal to preserve “leverage” ahead of the January 30 funding deadline.

Congress will not return until the week of January 5, leaving lawmakers with a short runway to salvage a deal before funding runs out.
