On April 6, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office in Florida was told about an 8-month-old child at the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The child’s grandmother initially noticed he was underweight.
Hospital staff said the child was starved and had the weight of a 2-month-old baby, according to the sheriff’s office.
The baby also had a skull fracture before being admitted to the hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.
Haylee Kent, 21, the child’s mom, did not visit the hospital or speak with child services, according to police. However, she agreed to meet with detectives several days later. During that interview, she was arrested.
Investigators said there was a pattern of abuse and they believe the child was neglected since birth.
Kent even told police that “she felt the way her child needed to be fed was annoying, so she just opted not to do so,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Kent was arrested and charged with child neglect with great bodily harm and child neglect without great bodily harm. The victim is improving, gaining weight and has been placed in foster care, according to the sheriff’s office.
