President Joe Biden berated supporters of the Second Amendment Tuesday, claiming that they would need F-16 fighter jets if they truly wanted to take on the American government.
Biden’s comments came as he pushed the narrative that citizens of the United States have no need for AR-15s at a private California residence, according to a report.
“We have to change,” Biden said. “There’s a lot of things we can change, because the American people by and large agree you don’t need a weapon of war. I’m a Second Amendment guy. I taught it for four years, six years in law school. And guess what? It doesn’t say that you can own any weapon you want.”
There are simply weapons an individual cannot own under the Second Amendment, the president said.
“Even during when it was passed, you couldn’t own a cannon. You can’t own a machine gun,” Biden said. “No, I’m serious.”
The president then chided those supporters working to defend the Second Amendment from infringement.
“You know, I love these guys who say the Second Amendment is … you know, the tree of liberty is watered with the blood of patriots,” Biden said. “Well, if [you] want to do that, you want to work against the government, you need an F-16. You need something else than just an AR-15.”
American gun manufacturers are fond of AR-15s due to their cheap production and large profit margins, according to Biden, the report noted.
“You know one of the reasons why the AR-15 is so strongly supported by so many folks in that — in that industry?” he asked. “Number one, it’s the cheapest weapon to make and it’s the highest profit motive they have for any weapon that is made. It makes more money to sell an AR-15 than any other weapon you can buy.”
Biden’s comments Tuesday form part of his broader crusade to limit access to certain firearms.
He brought up the F-16 in discussions about the Second Amendment in January.
“I love my right-wing friends who talk about [how] the tree of liberty is watered with the blood of patriots,” Biden said at the time. “If you need to worry about taking on the federal government, you need some F-16s. You don’t need an AR-15.”
