A Wisconsin mom has accused her dyslexic son’s school of denying him additional support because he is white.
Colbey Decker said Green Bay Area School district is discriminating against her child by prioritizing racial minority students for access to special education services.
According to The Telegraph, Ms Decker said in a letter threatening legal action last week that her son, who is in the fourth grade, was denied entry to his school’s literacy program for almost a year because he was not part of a racial minority.

The Wisconsin school board has launched an internal investigation following Ms Decker’s claim.
Ms Decker’s son was diagnosed with dyslexia in 2022, and she sought additional support for him soon after he was enrolled in the school district earlier this year.
Although she provided the adequate paperwork needed for the reading interventions she requested, Ms Decker claimed her son was put on a wait list for a reading group program that did not meet her son’s needs.
According to an excerpt from the Green Bay’s King Elementary, one of the school’s priorities is providing ‘additional resources to First Nations, Black and Hispanic students’.

‘I couldn’t believe that someone would actually withhold services because of the color of someones skin’, she added.
According to the Winsconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 programmes receiving federal funds are prohibited from discriminating based on race.
‘I never imagined that in this day we could possibly look at a child and say ‘sorry you don’t get reading support because we are going to give it to someone else”, Ms Decker said.

‘It is my job as a mom to stand up for my children’.
‘I would like to see the green bay school district adopt a policy of being totally colorblind, providing services to whoever needs the help’, Ms Decker added.
