Bondi to announce plans to reopen Alcatraz as Pelosi calls it Trump’s ‘stupidest initiative yet’

“It should concern us all that clearly the only intellectual resources the Administration has drawn upon for this foolish notion are decades-old fictional Hollywood movies,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi said

Attorney General Pam Bondi is set to announce plans to reopen Alcatraz as a federal prison on Thursday, as Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., calls it President Trump’s “stupidest initiative yet.”

A bill is expected to be introduced in the House of Representatives to pave the way for Alcatraz to reopen by ending environmental protections for the site and rescinding the National Park Service’s control of it.

Pelosi said in a statement that reopening Alcatraz is “the Trump Administration’s stupidest initiative yet.”

“It should concern us all that clearly the only intellectual resources the Administration has drawn upon for this foolish notion are decades-old fictional Hollywood movies,” the former House speaker added.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie (D) also said in a statement, “There’s no realistic plan to make Alcatraz reopen as anything other than the wonderful tourist attraction that it currently is.”

The cost of refurbishing the island and building a new prison would be at least $250 million, according to estimates.
