Mayor de Blasio’s controversial plan to change admissions to the city’s top specialized high schools would slash enrollment of white kids from 24 percent to 15 percent, based on Department of Education projections.

The proposal, also pushed by Chancellor Richard Carranza, would phase out the SHSAT admission test used for the top schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx HS of Science and Brooklyn Tech.
Instead, the city would offer seats to the top 7 percent of students in each of 600 middle schools, based on their classroom grades and scores on 8th-grade state math and English tests.
The plan would boost enrollment of black and Latino kids to 46 percent. Currently, those kids, who make up 67 percent of the city’s population, hold only 10 percent of seats in all eight schools.
