NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA: A 12-year-old was taken into custody after she allegedly brandished a firearm at another school girl following a fight inside a school bus. The incident reportedly happened on Friday, August 19, when the accused from Akili Academy and another child got into a brawl and apparently pulled each other’s hair.
But the children’s fight did not end there as the girl then de-boarded the bus, took a gun from a vehicle, and yelled outside the closed bus. She continued to scream at the other girl and demanded the bus’ gate to be open but when her wish was not fulfilled, she walked away. Footage obtained by WWL showed the shocking moment as children inside the school’s vehicle can be heard screaming and crying.
However, the more appalling thing was the girl’s mother supporting her and justifying her action. In a now-deleted social media post, the woman apparently said, “She was being bullied, so that’s why she pulled out a firearm. When a child is under frustration and being bullied, she is supposed to have help with self defense.”
The 12-year-old’s mother also reportedly admitted that her daughter had a gun in her possession. “It was in her possession and she pulled it,” she added. Later, the girl was arrested and charged with aggravated assault while her mother faces charges of aggravated assault and contributing to the delinquency of juvenile charges.
Crescent City Schools, the charter over Akili Academy, issued a statement, saying, “Crescent City Schools and Akili Academy are horrified by this brazen act of violence that happened off school campus. School buses should be safe places of transport for our young people. Police were called Friday afternoon during this incident and police action was taken. The student is not at school and we are working with NolaPS regarding disciplinary action.”
NOLA Public Schools also released a statement that added, “The safety and well-being of NOLA Public Schools students are our top priority. The District is aware of an incident involving a weapon and a student from Akili Academy. The school immediately contacted law enforcement, and the District has been in contact with Crescent City Schools’ leadership regarding this matter.”
Meanwhile, the fight video has attracted a lot of comments online with a person sharing, “We need to allow teachers and staff to legally be able to restrain even with force these kids. Both ends on bad parenting and a culture of complete ignorance towards bullies. All kids have a right to feel safe at school. Being humbled by an adult is not always a bad thing.” Another one said, “PARENTS need to start stepping up and teaching their children better values than this type of crap. It has gotten way out of hand. Monitors on buses who can absolutely restrain these kids when they behave like this is a must.”
“Kids fight all the time, always have but to have access to a hand gun? Seriously screwed up,” the third one noted and the fourth one added: “What In The Hell is going on with our children, Girls fighting like animals, The Mom giving her the weapon Have We Lost our damn minds?”
