According to a criminal complaint affidavit, the incident began when Maradiaga-Carias started arguing with a detention officer (DO) and refused to follow instructions, making provocative gestures. When a supervisor arrived to assist, the situation quickly escalated.

The affidavit alleges that Maradiaga-Carias grabbed the supervisor, struck him in the head, and then put him in a headlock. The initial officer intervened to restrain the individual, who allegedly broke free with one leg and kicked the officer twice in the side of the head. One of the kicks reportedly caused the officer to fall backward and strike his head on a brick wall.

Additional detention officers eventually arrived and secured Maradiaga-Carias with handcuffs. Both injured officers received medical evaluations. One officer was treated for minor injuries and placed on medical leave, while the other was treated and diagnosed with a mild concussion.

If convicted, Maradiaga-Carias faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons made the announcement regarding the charges. The case is being investigated by ICE and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Wannarka.
